How To Choose The Perfect Wedding Veil Length For Your Dress

Choosing your veil length is one of the most important decisions you'll make when completing your bridal look. The perfect veil should complement your dress style, venue, and personal aesthetic, while making you feel absolutely stunning, and truly yourself, on your wedding day.

~ Understanding Veil Lengths

Birdcage & Blusher Veils (6-12 inches)

Perfect for vintage-inspired looks, registry office weddings, or brides wanting a subtle touch of tradition. These short veils work beautifully with tea-length and narrow dress styles, and add a playful, flirty, romantic element without overwhelming your look.

Shoulder, Elbow & Waist Length Veils (20-32 inches)

Ideal for casual or intimate weddings, these veils offer coverage without drama. They pair wonderfully with simple sheath dresses, or when you want your dress details to take centre stage.

Fingertip, Waltz & Ballet Length Veils (36-66 inches)

Such a versatile and popular choice! These mid-length veils complement nearly every dress style and venue. They're long enough to feel bridal, but practical enough for dancing and celebrating. On petite brides, ballet length veils can give the effect that floor-length veils give on a taller bride; so they're perfect for petite brides seeking a floor-grazing veil. They give more drama than a short veil, while still being a very wearable wedding veil length that's easy to manage throughout your big day.

Floor & Chapel Length Veils (72 - 90 inches)

These elegant veil lengths create beautiful fluidity and movement and a luxe feel, and are stunning with column, fit and flare, A-line and ballgown silhouettes. Chapel length veils add some formality and tradition, while still remaining easy to manage during your wedding ceremony and celebrations.

Cathedral, Royal, Regal and Imperial Length Veils (105 - 180 inches)

These longer lengths are the ultimate statement piece for formal church ceremonies and grand venues. They create breathtaking drama as you walk down the aisle, and photograph beautifully in large spaces. Stunning with ballgown and A-line silhouettes that have a long train, but equally beautiful with sheath dresses, fit and flare, trumpet and mermaid styles.

Wedding veil lengths do vary between different veil makers, so one designer's cathedral length might be different to another. That's why it's always possible to customise your veil length at Blossom & Bluebird - so you have the perfect length for your wedding gown.

~ Matching Your Veil to Your Dress

For Detailed Backs: If your dress features intricate lace, beading, or an open back, consider a shorter veil (shoulder to fingertip) or a single-tier style that won't hide these beautiful details.

For Simple Silhouettes: A longer, more dramatic veil (chapel or cathedral) adds visual interest and balances minimalist gowns beautifully.

For Dress Trains: For longer veils, your veil should often either match your train length or extend beyond it (whether by a little, or a lot!) for a cohesive, elegant look. Many of my brides have opted for longer veils that rest on top of their dress train though, if they're concerned about their veil snagging on the surface of the ground while they walk, or if they're worried about the wearability of their veil through the day. There are no fixed rules; it's your wedding day so you get to choose!

~ Consider Your Wedding Venue / Setting

Intimate venues and registry offices can suit shorter veils, while grand churches and stately homes can accommodate dramatic cathedral, royal, regal and imperial lengths. Garden and outdoor weddings look lovely with flowing fingertip, waltz or ballet length veils that catch the breeze and flow gracefully around you. Again, though, there are no rules - follow your heart and choose the veil length that speaks to you!

It's worth considering the surface you'll be walking on when you consider your veil fabric, as some of my tulles, especially the soft and drapey English, French and Italian silk and silk-style tulles, are more delicate and could possibly catch on rougher surfaces. In these cases, you may prefer to go for one of my more structured, voluminous tulles that can skim over the ground without snagging. If you're in love with the very flowing, fluid soft tulles though, then pick a slightly shorter length, or have bridesmaids / friends on hand to hold your veil off the ground while you cross the rougher surfaces.

~ Your Personal Style Matters

Ultimately, your veil should feel authentically you. If you love drama and formality, embrace a cathedral, royal or regal length veil. If you prefer understated elegance, a fingertip, waltz or ballet length veil might be perfect. There's no wrong choice - only what makes you feel most beautiful!
